CONTAMINATED gravel, days without gas, shocking wake-up calls and damaged driveways have left a ward councillor flooded with residents' concerns.

Cllr Mel Allcott is calling on Cadent Gas to be held responsible for its actions and start an internal investigation on the work it is carrying out in her Claines ward.

The move comes after she and many residents in the area voiced their frustration and anger towards the company that has been changing all the old gas pipes.

In response, Cadent Gas said it understands residents' frustrations and will work with them and the local authority to see how they can provide better support.

Cllr Allcott said: "It has significantly affected people across most of Claines in many ways like properties being damaged to loss of gas supply.

"There have been sewage problems, disruption, and work not being done to the best of its standard.

"I have had residents not consulted that work was taking place on their properties and taken for granted because they were not properly notified.

"It has created a large amount of casework."

In two cases, nails and bolts were found in the newly placed gravel at Claines Church Hall and a neighbour's drive on Cornmeadow Lane, leading some to speculate that it was contaminated.

Frank Farmer, who lived at the Cornmeadow Lane property, spoke about his "atrocious" ordeal when he woke up to the providers digging a deep trench through his garden and drive.

Two pensioners, Ron Donald, 75, and his wife, 71, and their neighbours were also angry after they were left with no gas and struggled to keep warm during freezing temperatures for three days.

Mr Donald claimed he was unaware of the mains being turned off.

Cllr Allcott also mentions one of her neighbours who, a year or so ago, had sewage spill out in their drive because the company hit the wrong pipe.

She also said she has experienced her drive not being put back properly after work was completed.

Cllr Allcott added: "I would like them to take a thorough review of the work that took place and look at the level of complaints and do a proper review of the contractors they used.

"To take notice and make a change."
