A TERRIFIED woman caused chaos after driving the wrong way up a spiral ramp at a city centre car park.

The elderly woman, who asked not to be named, has called for better signs at NCP Cathedral Square after driving up the exit in Friar Street.

However, a spokesperson for NCP pointed out that there are "large floor markings and the signs at the entry" of the car park.

But the woman, who is not from Worcester, feels these signs were not clear enough which led to her error.

Making matters worse for the driver, a second car followed her up the ramp causing a traffic jam with the 74-year-old praising a good Samaritan who came to her aid on Sunday (July 2).

The confused driver said she only realised that she had made a mistake when she was greeted by the exit barrier and was facing cars queuing on the other side.

The pensioner claims there are no clear signs around the NCP Car Park on Friar Street and fears it could become dangerous.

The driver said: "This could have happened to anyone else.

"I'm 74 and would not be able to drive down the slope.

"I couldn't go forward or back, and a car followed me - I was terrified."

The Mercedes managed to reverse back down the steep slope, however, the woman was trapped at the top of the spiral ramp.

Causing more chaos, cars which were stuck trying to exit resorted to leaving the car park driving the wrong way through the entrance in Cathedral Square.

The woman, who is not from Worcester, said she could have been stuck there for ages if it was not for a "kind gentleman" who managed to call up NCP.

They eventually raised the barrier and let her through the exit..

A spokesperson for the NCP car park said: "We have clear signs on site and floor markings that show the entrance and exit.

"The design of the car park means that the left-hand lane is a down ramp and the right-hand lane is an up ramp.

"Drivers just need to observe the large floor markings and the signs at the entry."
