"DISTRESSED and annoyed" residents will have the chance to discuss "eyesore" broadband poles that have popped up on residential streets.

The poles have been installed in areas across Droitwich by operators for a new superfast broadband network.

But one resident in Droitwich called the poles an eyesore and said they are outdated.

John Berrey, resident of Vernon Grove, on the Ledwych estate, said: "We have several in our small cul-de-sac. All of our estate has them.

"We were notified they were being put up but not given any real choice. I think they are an eyesore.

"It is like going back 40-odd years when we had telegraph poles. In this day and age, why do they have to be so intrusive on our landscape?

"Once the poles were up, the trees then had to be trimmed so the wires could be attached. We've had the poles up for a good two months now, all connected together.

"Despite this, we have had no further communication asking us to sign up or any introductory offers. Just the poles and wires everywhere."

Ciaran Power, head of development management for Wychavon District Council, said communications apparatus can be installed by relevant operators without planning permission.

He said: "We were notified of this work and are satisfied the work is covered by permitted development rights, for which no planning permission is required.

"As a result, the operator can progress these works without seeking any formal approval from the council.”

Cllr Richard Morris, Worcestershire County and Wychavon District councillor has called a meeting together to discuss the poles.

He said: “Lately several communities in Droitwich have been subjected to Full Fibre and plans to site poles for Superfast Broadband.

"Residents have noticed markings on pavements and then received letters, with only a few weeks’ notice, notifying that poles will be placed in their roads.

"This has caused, for many residents, distress, and annoyance.

"This Council calls for a public meeting to be arranged at the soonest opportunity to call on Full Fibre to explain their plans for Droitwich, their plan of communication and consultation with communities and for Wychavon District & County Council to explain the planning consent.”
