A FORMER soldier turned author will be signing copies of his debut novel about the civil war at an independent bookshop in Worcester.

Soldier and author Charles Cordell will be talking about the British Civil Wars and signing copies of his debut novel at Bored & Bookless, in Worcester, on Saturday (September 2).

He will be joined by the local Worcester Re-enactors dressed and equipped as soldiers of the English Civil War.

God’s Vindictive Wrath is the first of a series of novels chronicling the English Civil War.

The second book in the series, The Keys of Hell, is planned for release in early 2024.

Charles Cordell has been a career soldier and diplomat on the ground in the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa.

He said of his book: “This story is not based on a single hero. It does not take sides. Its voices - ordinary men and women - face each other in the chaos of Britain in civil war.

"Hardship, inequality, injustice, scar each character. Each faces the brutal reality and human emotions of war, the bloodiest in British history – a war fought in our towns, villages and fields, a war that forged the United Kingdom and the political divisions that persist today.”

Joining Charles Cordell will be re-enactors from the Worcester Re-enactors – dressed and equipped as the militiamen that defended Worcester during the English Civil War.

Later, Charles Cordell will be joining them at the Guildhall, the Commandery and Fort Royal Hill, on Sunday to commemorate the Battle of Worcester 1651.

Charles Cordell has pledged that 2 per cent of royalties will be donated to Armed Forces charities. This will include the RBLI programme for homeless veterans, a cause very close to his heart.
