A NEW map has revealed the 'hidden histories' streets across the county.

Worcestershire Industrial Archaeology and Local History Society have published an online map that pins the location of historical objects across Worcestershire, called ‘Hidden Histories On Our Streets’.

The map currently pins over 520 objects, from old gas lanterns and relics of Worcester’s electric tram system to vintage post boxes and ceramic brewery plaques from the 1960s.

It also includes a directory of iron street covers advertising local businesses from years gone by. All of the map pins are categorised, and you can filter the map by category to find objects quickly.

Adam Šapić, who is leading the project, said: “This online map gives residents the opportunity to discover niche and overlooked historical objects that may exist near their homes and places of work and memory.

"It has turned into a game for some, who now send us photos of new finds. The map has certainly shone the spotlight on former Worcester businesses and the people behind them, some went on to hold high civic office.

"It also highlights features of our streets that have become redundant as technology continues to gather pace.”

The hidden histories map is part of the society’s modernisation programme, which includes digital projects that are freely accessible to the public and requires no registration.

You can find the map by searching ‘Hidden Histories On Our Streets’ or visiting wialhs.org.uk.

The society also encourages the public to contact them through the website if they discover something of interest in the county.
