POLICE have warned dog owners it will soon become a criminal offence to own XL Bullies after they were already made a banned breed.
It will criminal offence (without a certificate of exemption) to own an XL Bully from February 1 after they were added to the Dangerous Dogs Act on December 31 last year.
Since 31 December 2023, you can legally have your XL Bully in public provided that:

❗ the dog is on a lead being held securely by a person no less than sixteen years of age

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "From February 1 2024, it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales unless your dog has a valid Certificate of Exemption.
If you’re unsure and believe your dog is an XL Bully, please apply for a certificate as a matter of urgency. You must complete your registration by 12pm on 31 January 2024.

"The first stage of the XL Bully ban came into force on 31 Dec '23 meaning the breed was added to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
"Owners have now been warmed that it is illegal to sell an XL Bully dog; abandon an XL Bully dog or let it stray; give away an XL Bully dog; breed from an XL Bully dog; have an XL Bully in public without a lead or muzzle."
