CONTROVERSIAL plans for 28 affordable homes are on the table after previous larger housing schemes were rejected as residents raise concerns about loss of green space.

The latest scheme, if approved, would see the construction of 28 homes within the site of the former Tolladine Golf Course, in Darwin Avenue near Newtown Road, in Worcester.

The outline application is described by Fisher German in their planning statement, prepared on behalf of Tustin Holdings Ltd, as '100 per cent affordable housing'.

A consultation on the outline planning application closes on February 21 but no planning committee meeting date at Worcester Guildhall has yet been scheduled to decide the matter.

Similar applications but for 50 homes by Bromford Developments Ltd were rejected in 2021.

The buildings in the new application, set to be of red brick and render, aim to match and 'harmonise' with those nearby. Access would be created off Darwin Avenue to serve the new houses and cycle sheds would be provided for them.

A spokesperson for the applicants said: "The overall vision for the site is to provide a distinctive and high-quality place, which enhances the qualities and character of Ronkswood, Worcester."

However, in comments submitted to Worcester City Council, one resident said: "I believe this development will have a huge negative impact on the residents in the surrounding area.

"It is destroying a frequently used local green space which there aren't many of in a city. There is already many houses squeezed along Darwin Avenue and there is no need for any more, as well as destroying a frequently used area by many residents of WR5."

One resident said: "This latest application has been put together very quietly and without much local awareness until very recently.

"The area concerned will, I believe, be protected in the new south Worcestershire development plan but this won’t be finalised until later this year, so clearly this application is trying to shoehorn this in before that plan is formally adopted."

We reported in 2021 how the plan to build 50 homes on the former city golf course has received the backing of council officers despite being previously rejected. It involved the demolition of three homes and was rejected in June 2021 and again in December 2021.

The application involved affordable housing being built on the former Tolladine golf course in Worcester by housing association Bromford with three homes in nearby Darwin Avenue demolished to make way.
