ASSISTANT manager Ashley Vincent argued Worcester City’s superior quality had eventually told in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Walsall Wood.

A second-half brace from Jordan Harrison put City in control with Joey Butlin’s penalty in the fourth minute of added time coming too late to make a significant impact.

After an uneventful first half, City gradually made their presence felt with Liam Lockett dashing into the box and lifting over Wood keeper Lloyd Ransome only for Joe Ballinger to hack off the line just past the hour.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes later when Luke English hustled Dan Okojie off the ball before nudging to Harrison stationed on the right corner of the box to fire a crisp low shot across Ransome.

The lead was doubled 13 minutes from time when James Baldwin was released down the inside left with his low cross-shot rammed in by Harrison from the corner of the six-yard box on the far side.

City stayed in complete control until Josh Willis needlessly bumped Tony Clarke to the ground despite the Wood frontman being at the dead-ball line, wide of the goal frame and with his back to the action.

Butlin fired low to Dan Jezeph’s left and the hosts wanted a second penalty at the end but their handball shouts fell on deaf ears.

The seventh win in 10 unbeaten Midland Football League Premier Division outings saw City climb to second in the table with Vincent pleased to see a sharper second-half showing.

“I felt we had made pretty hard work of it up until half-time because they were there to get at. We almost let them camp in our half,” said Vincent.

“The second half was a totally different story, the roles were reversed and what we had that they lacked on the day was quality. We got our goals in the end.

“We were over the moon to go 10 unbeaten by turning over the favourites for promotion on their own patch. We have to be happy with that.”

On the Willis incident, Vincent said: “It was a naïve one from Josh and I thought it was a penalty.

“He got the wrong side of their lad who was going away from goal. I spoke to Josh afterwards, he is one of a few great young players here who now have to learn the game.

“All he had to do was see him out towards the corner flag and it would have been danger averted but that lesson will be learned.

“One of their guys wanted a second penalty after that. I could not see whether it was or not but he admitted they had not deserved anything out of the game anyway.

“It was a hard-fought and deserved away victory.”
