A SCHOOL described as having a “warm family feel” has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award.

St Georges’s Catholic Primary School has been nominated for Primary School of the Year Award.

Headteacher of the school in Thorneloe Walk, Worcester, Gill Gittins said: “I am shocked and very pleasantly surprised. Whilst we’ve had excellent results and a successful Ofsted report, a personal nomination of this type has been welcomed by everyone at the school. We aim to provide the best academic and spiritual education for all children so they become resourceful and resilient learners. We hope to nurture their independence so they can become the best they can be, not only academically but develop into well-rounded, confident individuals.”

The school has close links with both the church and wider community. Every year the staff and pupils support various charities, raising money through different fundraising events. Other initiatives include collecting for the local food bank, supporting the homeless, litter pick campaign, carol singing at nursing homes, and a pen pal scheme with the elderly in the community.

Margaret Powell who nominated the school said: “St George’s is a small, one form entry school, where over 15 different first languages are spoken. The pupils bring the richness of their varied cultures into school life, which is encouraged and well supported. It is a school with a warm family feel, where the headteacher and senior leaders know every child by name and where everyone is included.

“Children look forward to coming to school. The community of parents is just as strong, with a vibrant parent-teacher association, who work tirelessly, giving up their own time, to raise much needed funds for the school.

“They strongly believe that every single child can achieve to be the best they can be, whether they are a boy or girl, with or without special needs/disabilities, faith or no faith, able or less able, English speaking or not, living with parents or carers.

“The headteacher has an unwavering child focus and works tirelessly to support and challenge her staff in order for all the pupils to achieve their best. The headteacher has an open-door policy and is available to parents. Staff positively encourage home-school relationship.”
