A HOMELESS man has been banned from sleeping in a Worcester charity shop doorway and being abusive to staff inside.

Simon Petford has been slapped with an interim criminal behaviour order (CBO) which bans him from sleeping in the doorway of the Cancer Research UK shop in The Cross in Worcester city centre - and from being a nuisance and making any threats to staff or volunteers.

The interim order was granted until another court matter against Petford is resolved. It was made following Petford's conviction for harassment which he admitted.Worcester News:

Between November 21 and December 19 last year he has 'repeatedly been sleeping in the doorway at the Cancer Research Shop', a spokesman for West Mercia Police said.

"When asked to move he has become abusive and threatening to staff" said a police spokesman.

The interim order states that the defendant is prohibited from: sleeping or lingering in doorways of commercial or residential properties unless he has the permission from the owner/occupier; refusing to move on from any area, location or building when asked by someone with the requisite authority to do so; obstructing any public thoroughfare by lying across it or leaving detritus to the point where it causes an obstruction.

The order also states he is banned from entering or loitering outside the Cancer Research UK Shop, The Cross, Worcester, or approaching or communicating in any way with any of the staff; removing items from any bins situated outdoors without permission from the owner or person responsible for the bin; engaging in any type of disorder or disturbance that is likely to have caused alarm to others who witness it.

Petford is also required to engage with housing officer from Worcester City Council who will signpost him to the various agencies who can provide support including accommodation and financial support and advice; outreach support from Maggs Day Centre MOATS team; access to GP within Maggs Day Centre; access to counselling services via signposting to the GP; referral to rehabilitation programmes and support from a harm reduction support worker.
