During the incident, a woman could be seen being carried out of a block of flats and residents heard that a knife was also seized.

One officer was spotted carrying a tube which police use to contain blades.

A witness, who declined to be named, counted five police cars at the scene and between five and 10 officers as part of the response team.

West Mercia Police has now revealed further details of the incident which they described as 'a medical episode' and have explained why they had to act.

A spokesman said: "She was arrested – she was brandishing a knife, but was using it to self-harm.

"Officers had to intervene for her own safety (and theirs) and took her straight to hospital.

"She was not detained in custody and there is no onward investigation or prosecution."

A witness spoke about the incident on Saturday, describing how the woman had been 'drinking in the day and shouting at her partner' and behaving in an antisocial manner.

The witness said: "This evening since 8ish she has been screaming, hallucinating, kicking cars and bashing gates.

"It's now after 10pm and she is still screaming. In total, these few hours there have been six police cars, one rapid response paramedic and she is still screaming.

"I called the police the first time but they just left her. She started again and someone else called them so five cars and 10 police turned up.

"It was so loud.  Other residents in the flats have had enough of her. Pensioners live there and are scared and vulnerable.

We are supposed to feel safe in our own home and so should the people in the flats she lives in.

"She was carried away by two officers holding her arms and legs with an officer behind holding a taser."
