A POPULAR city running event is back after a fallen tree forced organisers to cancel last week's run.

The Worcester Parkrun, which was due to be held at the Countryside Centre, was called off last Saturday due to safety concerns surrounding the fallen tree. However, it is back on again this Saturday after teams with chainsaws removed the fallen tree from the trail.

A spokesperson said today (Thursday): "Today the Worcester Council Countryside Team along with their regular volunteers, big chainsaws, chains and land rovers, are removing the tree that fell on the trail last week.

"I'll be checking the route later tonight. So 100 per cent confident we will be back on for parkrun given how good the team are. Thanks Worcester Countryside Team."

The event is a free, weekly, timed 5k walk/jog/run at 9am every Saturday.

A Facebook post on The Worcester Park Run page from September 16 said: "Due to a fallen tree we will have to cancel tomorrow's Worcester Park Run at the Countryside Centre.

"Your safety is our primary concern and there's no safe way to pass the fallen tree. Thank you to parkrunner Tony who let us know so we could go and inspect, after work.

"Apologies for any plans you may have made we are all gutted as it was Gerry's 400th, so it's a rollover to next week."

The Worcester Park Run is open to all ages and abilities and is entirely organised by volunteers.

Last week, the runners at the event took part in a minute silence in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
