THE Christmas Fayre will soon be upon us but certain city roads will have to be closed and barriers put in place to stop attacks, causing disruption.

The Victorian Christmas Fayre will get underway in Worcester on Thursday, December 1.

Worcester City Council says the event contributes £7.3 million a year to the economy in Worcestershire.

However, road closures in the city centre will have an impact on both residents and businesses - and the council has acknowledged the level of inconvenience and asked for understanding.

There will be 20 decorated wooden chalets in the High Street and stalls in New Street, Friar Street, Pump Street, the Cornmarket and Cathedral Square.

New this year are pop-up stalls in The Shambles. Access to the city centre will be restricted during the fayre, operated by Cotswold Markets Ltd.

The event will feature Victorian dress, local producers and businesses have been asked 'to get involved with the Fayre as much as possible'.

The recommendation is that deliveries are rescheduled to times outside of the fayre's operations, where possible.

In a letter sent out by Worcester City Council to people and businesses, a spokesperson says: "Your needs are considered at every stage of planning, but we understand there will necessarily be an impact on people because of the road closures and additional visitors to the city."

They added: "We are aware that not everyone enjoys or gets a direct benefit from the event and we could not run the Fayre without the support and understanding of local residents we know can be inconvenienced."
