AN 81-year-old man arrested as part of a murder investigation after the death of his wife remains in hospital nearly a week after the incident.

The man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following the death of a woman at Alexander Avenue in Droitwich as flowers were left at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the bungalow shortly before 8.45am on Friday after the death of an 80-year-old woman, named locally as Maureen.

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Providing an update, a spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "The 81-year-old man remains in hospital."

The man is also being quizzed on suspicion of attempting to murder a man in his 40s who lived in the property.

One resident said: “Yes we know the couple very well.

“All I am willing to say is that it is so sad. They were a lovely family and no trouble to anyone."

One local said: “I just thought they kept themselves to themselves, like other people around here generally do.

“It’s shocking to hear that a woman has been killed and another man left in hospital."

George Duffy, a Droitwich Town councillor, said: “Any kind of loss of life in Droitwich is usually quite a shock.

"In all the years I have lived here, I have found Droitwich a friendly place, especially after the pandemic.

"People had grown apart a bit but are starting to come back together. It is important to make sure we check in on our neighbours when we can and make sure we know what is going on around us.

"That is the best way we, as a community, can help keep tragic events to a minimum, to make sure everyone in our town feels part of our town.”

A witness described seeing police vehicles outside a bungalow with ambulances, a fire engine and multiple police vehicles there on the day of the incident.

Detective chief inspector Leighton Harding said: “We understand the concern incidents of this nature cause within local communities, we believe those involved are known to each and there is no risk to the wider community.”
