'DANGEROUS' flooding that plagues a busy city road whenever it rains could cause an accident, fear drivers.

Large puddles of water regularly appear on the A449, between the Sixways and Claines roundabouts in the second lane whenever it rains.

Though there are flood signs in place to warn drivers, there are now calls to fix the road to make it safer for drivers.

Drivers are forced to slam on their brakes, swerve or do through the deep puddles which could cause a crash.

Gary Gough, a driving instructor with No Gears No Fears, said the water poses a danger to drivers.

He said: "It most certainly is an issue.

"When you are just getting on from junction six that is where the pooling water is most prominent.

"If you are travelling through the outer lane at approximately 60mph to 70mph, you cause a wave of water to hit other cars around you.

"It is dangerous and has become quite a problem.

"I have noticed it for the last five years at least."

No Gears No Fears is an automatic driving school based in Worcester, which specialises in helping drivers with disabilities and learning difficulties pass their tests.

Mr Gough's concerns are echoed by Cllr Karen Lawrance, Worcester City Councillor for Claines Ward.

Cllr Lawrance said: "I have certainly been noticing the issues on the road and I agree that something needs to be done about it.

"It is a dipped road and although it is fairly obvious to see the water on the approach, there are occasions where drivers are either forced to drive through it or they just seem to drive through anyway and cause a splash.

"I appreciate that the project would most likely be rather difficult and expensive to carry out.

"It is not the only road where you get this but the signs are certainly needed in the area when it does get bad."

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said it was aware and is investigating the issue.

They said: “We are aware of the standing water on the A449, and we are currently investigating the drainage systems.

"There are flooding signs out to warn users of the road that it is liable to flooding.”
